A new breed of powerful yet portable plasma cutters has come on the scene during the
last several years.  These units provide enough power to tackle most shape cutting and
metal fabrication tasks, yet are light and compact enough to fit in the trunk of the average
automobile.  This site is intended to provide those considering the purchase of a new
plasma cutter with enough information about plasma cutters and their operation to make
a choice suitable to their purpose.

A number of manufacturers make quality portable plasma cutters.  Most of these
systems are similar in terms of cost, cutting capacity, and features across manufacturer
lines.  One company will emphasize a particular feature, while another will describe
many features in general terms.   Some of the firms produce many different kinds of
products, i.e, welding machines, positioners, CNC shape cutting machines, etc.
Others focus more on plasma cutting and/or related processes.

We have limited our brand comparisons to four of the best known plasma cutter producers:
Hypertherm, Esab, Lincoln Electric, and Thermal Dynamics.  We have also confined our
review to portable machines ranging from approximately 25 amps to 80 amps output.
This range encompasses units intended for cutting 1/4" or thinner material up to
machines that can cut 1" in manual use and 1/2" in automated, cnc plasma cutting.

We have also endeavored to present visitors with an introduction to the fascinating, and
surprisingly affordable cnc plasma cutter and its capabilities.  We hope you find
these pages interesting and informative.  We would appreciate any suggestions or
comments you may have.  You may reach us by e-mail at:  sales@torchmate.com .
We also invite you to visit our cnc plasma cutter site at: www.torchmate.com.

We are grateful to Hypertherm, Inc. and to Welding Design and Fabrication magazine for
a number of photographs they kindly permitted us to use.
